Would any former QB owners now in taipans know who has the plans for the QB2&3 and whether the hull mould still exists? or would anyone know if there are any QB's still in existence? IP: 124.148.46.45 |

The last i heard was that a guy named Barry Marmion had the moulds and was a licensed builder for the class. I'd love to know if there are any plans/boats still in existence... IP: 220.239.72.112 |

I would love to see some QB pics. I remember when I was just a little whippersnaper I was given a book on many different classes of boats and the QB always took my interest. Are there any surviving boats at all. Now to see that class rebuilt would be a remarkable achievment, but not one I think we are going to see. IP: 165.228.227.50 |

I'm not sure whether Barry is even still alive. As recall, he should now be in his 70's at least... Perhaps we can leave this one open for some help, i'd love to see some pics and definitely the drawings, they were a boat well ahead of their time... Can anyone assist? IP: 220.239.72.112 |

The bottom image is probably the last QB found in Melbourne. The owner contacted me about 6 years ago saying he had restored it and was looking to contact former owners to find out as much as he could but then I never heard from him again. I am searching for my photos and will try to get up screenshots from the only video I have of mine on Lake Cootharaba. I have pictures from the hull restoration but little in the way of on the water shots IP: 124.148.46.45 |

I'm not sure, it was a few years ago now, but I think I can remember a QB at Lake Learmonth Yacht Club, Ballarat, Victoria. I don't have any info on the boat or whether it still exists but there is two people I remember might be able to answer the question, they are Darren Crick, and Ross Bennett both of, or around Ballarat. I found a D Crick in the Ballarat phone book - 03 53432548, too many R Bennetts, but Darren could probably give you his number. Like I said, I don't know who the owner is, but I reckon Darren may have crewed (maybe) Matt Harper IP: 202.83.118.40 |

I wish we had this much interest whilst we were trying to keep the class alive!!! I won one of the last Vic State Titles on my old QB3, Decadence, in 1997 at Lake Boga, Vic. At that time, we had around 6 boats still active. I sold my boat (for $1,700 on a trailer!) to a guy from Ballarat who was going to sail at Lake Learmonth. That would have made 4 boats at Learmonth - the last active fleet of QB3s in the World! Unfortunately, Learmonth has been a dustbowl for last few years as a result of the drought, so that's the end of the class. However I know of at least QB3 that is in the process of being resurrected and will be back on the water shortly - maybe with a kite! I had an absolute ball sailing QB2s and then QB3s. In their day they were an absolute weapon. In terms of plans, I think you'd have no hope. It must be 15 years since a boat was built - by Barry Marmion (who, as far as I know, is stil very much alive!). I doubt very much whether the mold could still be used. I hope the this sheds a little light on what happened to the class. IP: 124.168.143.118 |

Would you have any photos you can email?. results on the last few class championships were recorded in a newsletter which i was sent years ago and i had hopes that some photos of the cats in the last few very keenly fought championships would have survived. I have no shots of my QB on the water and only photos of the last restoration about 10 years ago. IP: 124.148.46.45 |

I had a Quest B which I restored and raced a bit in the 70's. I bought it off a Victorian guy (Keith ??) who I worked with for a while. It was 20ft x 10 ft with a 30ft mast and a 'C' class main reduced at the foot. A nice boat and we had a lot of fun with it. Last I heard it was neing used by some sea scouts as a training boat of some sorts without the rig. I probably have some slides, I know I have a movie (8mm) my wife shot at Lake Munmora on the Central Coast. It was blowing and a Tornado was racing also but I broke the mast when the spanner system failed. The 'T' cartwheeled. I have a zillion slides so finding the ones of the 'B' will not be easy IP: 58.107.68.70 |

Any images of QB2's or 3's would be welcome. especially any in full flight. The last person from the QB association I had contact with was a Peter Mc?something from Ballarat who was then working at Sovereign hill. He gave me tips and pointers on sailing my QB but I haven't heard from him in the past decade. At that time some melbourne cat sailors were supposedly ready to pop out the first glass hulls from the original mould. I was very interested but never heard whether or not a glass QB was built I would really like to build up a decent collection of images before the class disappears entirely so any donations would be welcome.

Loose Goose was a glass Qb2 (later upgraded to qb3) It was a good 30 kilos heavier than the timber boats but that didnt stop it winning races. I scanned the photo of the goose, I found it in the filing cabinet at the lauderdale yacht club. Colin Bird and Kerry Wickham were the former owners of the boat. They moved onto a 5.8 and are now in the process of building a 35ft cruising cat. Colin once said to me the problem with building a QB class was the lack of a manufacturer. people would come up to him with money in thier pockets to buy a Qb, and ask where to get one? when he explained you have to build one and it will cost 3/4 of a new 5.8 people would run down to the nacra dealer and buy a 5.8. most people would rather buy a boat than build one. the square top Qb3 was a nice looking boat on the water, well ahead of its time. I used to sail a Stingray that I had built about 1975 and I had been told that it was a B2 class boat ie. 18' long by 8' wide and the 200 sq ft of sail. If all of of this is correct how did a Stingray compare against QB2. Ya gotta remember that back in the 70's the was fierce rivalry between Vic and NSW and you never saw a rival boat in the other state, I always remember thinking how nice it would be to race against one to see who had the faster boat. hi, as you said, LC, the rivalry between the B2 classes was gi-normous, Stingrays, and Qb2's dominated the class, and many good sailors participated. Here in QLD the Stingrays seemed to take hold in the southern parts, and the QB2 in the northern areas, but in those days we had many ,many well supported Regattas all up and down the coast, The eventual introduction of the newer fibre glass boats saw the gradual demise of the QB2, but the Stingray held on for many years , the Super Stingray, taller mast, bigger rig, is still seen at regattas, and many clubs. AAHH, the good old days. pete

I loved the look of Chris Cairns all timber Super Stingray. It was lacquared timber with a very hi gloss. I though it looked so good it could have been a grand piano. In the US of A they have a beautiful fleet of timber boats called Sharks. I will find the site and post it. They are a very old class, but beautiful boats. IP: 59.154.131.174 |

Ahhhh .. all this talk of boats long gone makes one feel quite maudlin. So I went out into the backyard in the long grass, you know, the really long grass where everything hides and lo and behold I found a Stingray. Looking at it closely I find that it aint in bad condition at all after having sat there for nearly seven years. The decks and deck beams will need replacing, the hulls and cases are glass so they are ok. I recall I had made new boards for it some time previously and I found those. The sail is very badly stained, BUT .... all the other expensive stuff is all there .. the hardware ..and I still have the plans from sail #177 which I built back in the early '70's. I'm smiling..... There were 3 QB2's sailing out of Townsville at one stage in the mid to late 70's. I crewed a couple of times on a lovely black hulled/white deck one called Black Magic Woman. [Santana was pretty big back then]. No photos though. Didn't see a stingray in the "flesh" until coming south years later. Yep....great days. IP: 203.28.159.169 |

I bought my QB in 94 in Townsville, It was originally called 'Bwana banana.' There was also a red QB2 "wind shadow? in the fleet. Local cats consisted of several A's, half a dozen tornadoes, a nacra or two and 'checkmate' the Cobra. That was the fleet until one of the tornado guys bought the first locally owned taipan. I had never seen a stingray until I sailed on lake cootharaba which had 6 or so top boats. IP: 124.148.120.161 |

Bwana Banana was built according to my estimation in 1975 or 76. First owner was Dallas Golding. It was bright yellow and the fastest boat in Townsville at the time. That makes your boat 22 years old. IP: 203.23.22.151 |

Hi All Speaking of Yellow, I was at the Western Region (Vic) Easter Regatta at Lake Bullen Merri, at Camperdown. The fleet consisted of the Vic Cobra State Titles and Dolphin State Titles, as well as the usual A's, Taipans, Mosquitos etc.. One thing that did catch my eye, but I think it arrived later in the weekend was QB3, sail number 307, bright yellow hulls, reasonable sails (Goodall) and looked quite tidy, I tried to get a picture, but had battery problems with the camera just when I needed it. I dumped the hulls in January when I shifted to Brisvegas. I got $26 for the mast at a metals recyclers, less $2 because he had to remove the stainless hounds fitting himself. A sad and sorry end to a great cat. I had every intention of rebuilding the QB but after toting up the costs for ply, epoxy glasscloth, new paint & sails bought a 14 footer to play with. There is a Mini Quest up in the trees at Sugarloaf SC. It's on a trailer and has been there long enough that you would probably need a chainsaw to cut it out! Its been a long time since I saw my last QB2 - at Portland YC in the early 80's - Red hulls I think. So, what is the difference between a '2 and a '3? IP: 155.143.196.240 |

When I was restoring mine I asked the only Victorian QB members active how to upgrade it. From memory, the only changes were increasing the mast from 28 to 30 feet, adding another panel to the sail and also relocating the centreboards aft by about 30-50 cms to counteract the new centre of effort. Also they had templates for allowing rounding off of the deck profile instead of leaving it flat

They bought the boat around Chrissie last year for $400... complete with holes in one of the hulls from where an adolescent dog has chewed through! However the mast was great, and the sails not TOO bad! They went all out on repairs and funky jobs with glass and resin to get its strength up! The next step was a professional spray job... Bright yellow! I haven't heard the latest for about 2 months, but I wouldn't be surprised if at some stage they go all out and get new sails and a spinnaker set up! The boats name is "Bees Knees" (spelling could be different) I'll do my best to find out more for you qb2, maybe even get some photos for you! IP: 220.238.93.159 |

I had Qb2 sail no 86 originally called bwana banana and built by two Townsville brothers. I bought it after being the only maricat sailor taking on tornadoes, A class, Qb's and other cats out of townsville. Just weeks after starting renovations I moved to the sunshine coast where I finally reassembled it and sailed it on lake Cootharaba. Most of my tribulations and ham fisted rebuilding efforts I got published on the Internet e-magazine "On the Wire" When I started this thread I was looking to get my hands on either any QB fibreglass hulls or the mould, last known to be in melbourne, and also any 30' masts, sails, rudders or other bits. Most Qb owners left in droves for then 'new' Taipans, and A's and other classes and Qbs dwindled to less than a handful being sailed or racing. I used to get a newsletter on the yearly nationals, but then I lost contact with those producing it. This time last year I moved to Brisbane and my QB hulls sadly went to the tip, and the mast/beams went for scrap. Interestingly people on this forum nearly all praised Qbs as a hell of a good cat, extremely competitive in its day and in the hands of a good skipper would still pose a good challenge to newer classes. After the shift to brisvegas I realised I had lost all my Qb photos so I asked here if anyone had some shots I could copy. I still get an occasional email from people in OZ and overseas inquiring about QB's from On the Wire. There are some B's up for sale now and then. I wouldn't like to see them disappear completely without a written and photo history of some kind being left for posterity.

Hi Qb2 What you say is pretty much spot on, when the plans were being formulated drafted by a chap maned John Warnok for the B3 this was going to see the class into the next era but as you say there was this thing called the Taipan and everyone was raving about it. We also lost some sailors to the A class including the builder who had a magniicent looking boat called ceda difference No.108 if memory serve me. The B3 was a great boat and many were quick to adopt it.There was great competive spirit amongst us and we often did road trips to help promote the class. In regards to photos , When we held our nationals in NSW at St Georges basin with the Stingrays I know that we had rolls of film shot Last I sore of them was when I leant them to a Glen Osbounre or Ozzie as he was Known maybe if some out there knows how to get in contact with him he might be able to have a look in the filing cabinet IP: 220.253.53.171 |

If anybody is still following this post I can fill in a few blanks. I owned and raced The Beez Knees (307) from about 1985 to 1992-3. Great to see it's still racing. Was on the QB3 committee for a few years. I am still in touch with a couple of the old crew. I still have a few bits and pieces if anybody wants them. IP: 124.190.162.178 |

Quest - Yes I know somebody who would LOVE spare bits and pieces! Beez Neez has been sold and I suspect is no longer raced BUT he bought another boat called "T*N Party" (the letters between T and N are missing.. its not a swear word) His name is Tom and he works with former Cube sailor Chris Culph IP: 58.111.226.229 |

Hey Mitchlb44 you don't know the sail number of t*n Party? Is it a 2 or 3? What's Culphy up to these days, haven't seen him for years? As for the bits; I have a fore beam (new)and a main beam (not drilled, is a peice of the old 2 mast), a 2 main, some 2 and I think 3 jibs, there may even be an ally rudder box or two up at the factory (off Sonic). These bits are spread over different parts of Victoria so may take a few weeks to get if they are of any use to anybody. There may be more, I will go for a rummage. You can email me richard@sumit.com.au With regards to the original plans, Lindsay Cummingham will still have a copy. Lindsay and his dad designed the Cube. I restored a Quickcat about 10 years ago and had to rebuild the centre frame, I rang Lindsay and he ran me off a copy of the plans for about $20. He would also be able to tell you about the Elwood Junior as I am sure that is a Cumminham design. IP: 124.188.57.144 |
