Hi,

I will post this on the taipan class forum.

Carbon would be a good choice.

Too the guy trying to pass his 5.7 on.

You say yours is the best around.I say that's a big call for a guy that has never seen 225.

Why don't you get a Capricorn mast? would be pretty close to the right length.

Also try and contact MACCA I think he has one.

AHPC are trying to convince him to go F18 rig because he destroyed his full rig and they havn't got the 5.7 length mast in the country. Last I heard is that if he can't get his boat going from the people selling the parts for it he won't buy another from them and to be honest I would couldn't blame him. It's pretty piss weak that there's no mast in the country for it.
Are you out there Macca? Have you got a new mast available?

Best boat! I'll stand by it till proven otherwise!!
I am very surprised that AHPC dont have the 5.7 mast, I bought one not 10 months ago, it's the same as the capricorn mast but the caps cut a foot of it, now unless soneone has cut a foot off the masts that AHPC had in stock (i doubt they would) they should have one.
they had another 3-4 out the back when i got mine. ring and talk to greg.

I don't think it is unreasonable for AHPC to stop supporting the 5.7, they didn't build very many and stopped production 10? years ago... how long do they have to go?

Colin's boat is very pretty btw, but the self tacking jib works much better when it is attached to the jib car!!!

Not a mast in stock and wouldn't be hard for them to order the bit longer masts.
If 137 is in better condition than 225 then it's probably only spent 20 nights of it's life out of the shed, 225 the last one built out of the molds is a one off, the only one canted without wedges. HooD the other F18 builders still fully support their older boats.

Dear Madabout cats,

AUS 118 has a spare used 5.7 mast if you cannot find another. I just replaced mine with a spare newie I bought from Greg a few years ago (just in case they stopped making them), to go with the new main.

So my now old spare mast has original stock holes in it, for intenal jib halyard and down haul system. I don't really wish to sell it but will help a fellow 5.7 if you really get stuck. Oh and is is in Rockhampton, but that is only an express post pack away I guess.

Regardless I hope you can find a new one as they are exactly the same section as the Capricorn, only longer as you know.
Regard,
Carl

I have sent Macca a PM.

Will see if he still has the mast when he replies.

Have you spoken to Greg from AHPC?
He will be the only one who could help you. Staff will just give you options.

Jeff, Told you you guys should of got F18's

Thanks for the replies Fergs spoke to Greg a couple of times and I've heard from Macca. He doesn't have a spare new mast but can organise a longer Infusion section in his next order so thats a start. Thanks for the offer of the mast Carl I'll run that by him

you should know jeff that 137 has spent more time out of the shed than in! and so has 225, yes it was the last boat out of the moulds and was always a light fast boat, not sure about the oly one without wedges though, (the forward deck mould was changed to look better though) origionaly put together by russell denholm as an AHP demo boat, as was 137 prior to that.
137 has had a major facelift in the past 2 years and is hardly recognisable to anyone who knew the boat befor (including me) and is now the fastest and sexyest 5.7 on the water....feel free to prove me wrong anyone.

Thats interesting that AHPC won't do the masts.

Stingrays use the AHPC 'Superwing' Sectio, same as the Taipan 4.9 but 2 foot longer, Greg said he can't do replacement masts apparently.

Thats a shame... they are just extrusions aren't they?

Not True.

AHPC next shipment of masts are all at 5.7 length. So get them while they last. They were ordered by mistake.

Good for you bad for them.

I owe AHPC a big apology for going nuts they have a pile of the masts coming, they're happy to supply bits for the 5.7
Carl thanks for the offer of the mast Danny found an older 5.7 with a good mast so I bought the boat. We'll use that mast to get Fergs on the water then when his new one comes we have an A class sailor taking on the old 5.7 so we'll have 3 running around every week.

Yours would definately be better 225 had its multi thousand facelift 3 years ago but Fergs must be the better sailor because he's not looking to change to a boozer cruiser

Mitch the whole batch is suitable for the Stingray and they're lighter than my bigrig section was. It was great to chase you around on the weekend hope you had fun.
Carl they don't know why the section broke 2ft from the base, make sure you sell 137 into SA.

Probably don't need to make people think you can ever get a Taipan for that price again, it helped that I happened to have a spare 5.7 trailer and beachrollers sitting here. Didn't look too good with broken transom and gaffa tape covering the dings in the bows. I've already got it glassed up and two coats of undercoat on, topcoats tomorrow, Fergs will be on it Saturday. Thanks for your help Danny theres now 5 Taipans here in the Southeast of SA and they'll all be sailing at our Earthmovers race in April. We just need to scrounge a snuffer so we can have 3 spin 5.7's, I've got a spare spin and pole already.

4 with spin 2 without. if a few of you guys could make it in march it could be the biggest gathering of 5.7s for years.
altona will have camping avaliable at the club (or very close by.)

This year would be a real stretch for me as thats my biggest work month of the year and I've already committed to go to Sauna Sail again and join the Rivoli Taipans at Lake Bullen Marie at Easter. Altona's not far from here (relatively) so I'd like to know the details. Can you send the info to jeffsouthall@yahoo.com.au so I can spread the word. I'm currently working with someone to try and get the SA Taipan association going and then we can work with you guys a lot better. If any of you guys like distance races on flat water have a look at our 70 plus km Earthmovers race on April 17th that I've posted in the regatta forum here. Last year I sailed the 13km downwind leg on the wire with the spin on flat water fantastic fun. We'll have minimum 3 X 5.7's with spin plus 4.9's, 5.8's, F18's, F16's, A's, Stingrays etc
When you've worked out next years programme can you send it to me so I can spread the word and organise myself to join you and I'll send you guys our program
regards Jeff

Hi Village Idiot,

Do you have a 5.7 boat to go under the mast and if so are you sailing locally? I am hoping to get to some SE Qld events this year and I am looking for company. (actually I am going to try to get to Altona, VIC, in March as well as the Gold Coast great race). Hope to hear from you.

The sails on the Blue Beast which was the prototype have number 58 on them I assume they came off a newer boat, what would be the proper number for me to use to list it on the Taipan site for the new owner?
If everything works out, Fergs gets his new mast this Friday. The Blue beast officially has a new owner who's already organised a new spin kit. Hopefully 3 x 5.7's with spin on the water here this Saturday

if u think red is fast why were you so worried about a 5.7 without spinnaker pre nationals hahahahah NOW THATS !!! AWESOME !!!! even up to the last race i had a chance. cannot wait for the states and i really hope that the guys/girls from interstate are able to come down/across to ALTONA to have some great times with very committed 5.7,4.9 sailors. BEWARE colin, brad and i have been secretly match racing and the outcome has been vvvvvvery good, lots of tuning going on. (did you notice that i was the only one at the nationals to beat the viper on corrected time. true hehehehe)

cannot wait for the states and i really hope that the guys/girls from interstate are able to come down/across to ALTONA to have some great times with very committed 5.7,4.9 sailors. BEWARE colin, brad and i have been secretly match racing and the outcome has been vvvvvvery good, lots of tuning going on. [/B]

Colin's been sharing some tuning tips with me so my pitchpoles should be even more spectacular now, the only thing that reasures me is that the distance travelled is still limited by the trap wire. I've bought Liz a softer harness so that when I follow her in it's gentle on me and we dont have to swim because the boat will catch up with us sooner or later.
I still doubt we'll get to Altona but I have it in the diary if the work thins out.
Djufrt I cant believe your looking at a boozer cruiser we raced with them last weekend and they were being blown flat then doing these wild roundups while we were bobbing along

to get the pic into the message... find the pic on the internets... eg: http://photos.catsailor.org/0910/Taipan2010/IMG_6965.CR2.jpg
(to find this address, right click, properties, address)

then you just need to put the tags around it. eg: [img']picture address[/img'] without the ' (had to put them in or it wont show up)

But yeah you got a jump on us that leg, but i seem to recall beating you guys to the finish line

Awesome, we beat Brett's viper too, after he capsized twice in the same spot! the video was priceless, just wish we had a copy.

haha yes i wondered if you would notice. There seems to be many photos/videos of the series with only a few on the website which is a pity. the photos are difficult to find and its only through the forum that you learn where some of them are. i had a friend holidaying in gipps ring me to say there is a photo of awesome and splinter in the results section. its a great photo of splinter and one you would want on a wall behind your bar or billiard table etc. BTW the poem is exellent. look forward to the next time we catch up, maybe i will have a spinnaker on board by then and have some good match racing.

Hope you can get to Altona Jeff. We are comming down; only 2000 km and a 24 hour drive. Looking forward to putting faces to forum page comments. I have heard that Altona is a place that cannot be missed. I hope we country folk can handle the pace.

We are also keen to see how a 5.7 is really meant to be sailed. From what I read there are quite a few 5.7 legandary sailors down your way.

I believe Greg, Colin, Brad, Neil and Jeremy will be there. Is this correct?

Regards, Carl

legendary in our own lunch boxes maybe, but we all have heapps of fun, love competition and have a great outlook on reality. Especially after racing when "i did this and you did this" etc, compare notes on what we changed, and the next week alter boats to find, you got me. Great fun and always want more. I can say that Greg Brad Jeremy are definate, Colin will be there unless he sells his boat to someone that doesnt want to sail in states and im pretty sure that Kym will be there work or family permitting. There will be ample Rigging area and 'camping you will need to check altona y c website for further info on who to talk to
