4.3 Mk1 Mast Step Loose

3 posts in this topic

My mast step was loose so I removed the rivets to redo them and then noticed that the step doesn't fit snug to the front beam.  The beam is curved while the mast step is flat, so the step will always be able to rock from side to side.  The only solution I have is to pack out the 2mm or so clearance at each end of the step and then re rivet.  That way the rivets won't work loose again.

Am I on the right track?  (Note, the step is curved to match the beam roundness, it just doesn't follow the port to stbd curve of the beam.)

If so, please advise what to pack it out with.

Thank you.

Can you feather it out a bit in the center with a grinder or a rasp so as it fits the athwartships curve of the beam, I've never noticed this problem before?  Maybe yours is an older mast step?

Some of the early front beams were poorly produced with the curve only starting at the centre,

ie, a curved half and a straight half. The mast support never fitted well, because of the poor curve.
