  3. There is a light mast and a heavy mast. The light mast use to be for cat rigged boats, however are few and far between and no longer class legal. The heavy mast is used for both cat, sloop, pin head or square top.

    learning to sail

This is a great DVD for beginers to advance, discusing everything from basic handling to tackticks. Very thorough, 2 x DVDs and a lot of hours of footage. In French and English, with some of the worlds best sailors on it including Booth, Bundy, Ashby and Scotty Anderson. http://tillard.georges1.free.fr/ http://www.chartandmapshop.com.au/product.php?id=16340

  7. Traveller center. Give the main a little twist to ensure tell tails flow. Easing a little more main does not hurt but never dump main. Only ease traveller if you have over stood a lay line. In the early days of running kite, we all kept the main on hard because we were told if we ease it, we will snap the mast. Over time, F18 and Tornado (alloy stick) sailors began easing more sheet because tight = choaking main. You will be supprised how much you can ease it. BTW, the carbon Tornado stick is near on bullet proof. If you need a quick set to get out of a congested area you can forget the downhaul and mast rotation (boards stay down on a T) and just set the kite, get on the wire, leaving the skipper to trip the lines later on the downwind.
  8. What club are you looking to race at. If it is on Westernport, then A H16 might be a better buy if you plan to race in the future. There are a few at Somers.
  9. A little more than $3500, however if it is still for sale, make an offer and see if they will take it (even $3500) If it is the boat I know, they are desperate to get rid of it. http://www.ausf18.org.au/bb/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1146&sid=eb6289fd7384ef0a9871bc86aba6055d
  10. I have sailed on a Taipan with an I14 kite re cut flatter and a Tornado with a 16 foot Skiff kite in the early years of spinnaker conversions..... I would not waste my time with mono kites. Far too full and to slow.
  11. Altona Sailing Club is also not too far away. We have a fleet of Taipan 4.9's, 5.7s and Hobie 14s, along with mixed monos. Learn to sail and race classes on Saturday mornings, a couple of club boats which may be available to rent, 1 I believe is a cat such as a Paper Tiger or Hobie.

    Sail sydney not next time

This would be left to the class assosiations to supply info and promote, not the race organisers.

If you are after good competition, have you considered an F18 or a Taipan 4.9?
