    5.0 nose dives

Sail the 5.8 then ,, your weight is better suited to that boat anyway.

    Replacement Rig from a Nacra

This may be a bit left field , how about a 18 ft skiff rig , they are long enough , light and plenty of 2nd hand sails and rigging . A lot of racing cats don't have rotating rigs , we had a 18 ft skiff rig on a farrier 720 tri I use to sail on , had no dramas at all with the strength of the rig . Other option would be maybe a tornado mast section but my opinion would be that this could be a little underdone with the weight of your boat.

    Stingray mk2 rig required

Think I might have one , I was told it was off a 5.7 taipan but I think it's too short for a taipan mast ,it could be off a tornado but it would be off an older boat and it's got twin traps so i'm not convinced it's off a T.It's a wing mast about 9.1 m long has all stays and trap wires down haul blocks ect ,a set of fiberglass diamonds, dead straight and no dings. I'm in Brisbane. I tried looking up the class rules for the mast length and hound heights but can't find the stingray rules on the web? Jay.
  5. Did a trip on my first 5.8 from Sandgate to Tangalooma via the sand hills.wind was se 10-15 in the morning took under 2hrs to get there.upwind .sailed down to Tangalooma (nice spinnaker run) had some lunch at the resort ,swim and snorkel behind the wrecks .sailed home in a 15-20 kt se,er took a little over 1hr 15mins to get back ,perfect reaching angle, averaged nearly 20kts on the trip back on the gps.
  6. Why ? Don't see how mast cleats help you to wild thing?Once the down haul is adjusted going round the top mark ,you would not need to touch it till the bottom mark, crew trims headsail ,skipper plays main..no time for touching downhaul. ,you only work the down haul going upwind and mast cleats are a pain in the ass for this.

    Sailing near a Jetty

Those fisherman who shark fish off that jetty need rooting. The problem is they float their gear out downwind with ballons, could be 200-300m or more. When the shark or stingray or whatever hits the bait the ballons either pop or float off downwind ,litering the environment. I do a heap of kiteboarding at Brighton, which is dead downwind of Woody point in a NE'er,and most days see these ballons floating downwind. As for compensation I would laugh at them and say "ring the fisheries or water police and I'll see you in court".
  11. Don't have a boat, use to sail 5.8's ,was chasing a tornado rig for a 23Ft tri I'm building and come across a 5.7 Taipan rig,the guy I brought it off somehow ended up with a spare one..

Are there cats bigger than 7 mts that go

After watching the European on the net I ask myself that question. And also what is the next step without taking out a second mortgage. There are many beach cat clubs (but not as many as mono's) but even less larger multihull clubs. The only answer I can give here is go and ask them (large multi clubs)if you can join them for a day sailing on what ever is going. I did 7 years ago, have spent days on many different multi's larger than 7 mts, I can also tell you I have just bought a hole in the water (larger than 8 mts)in which to throw money, I canl keep the cost lower than a new Nacra, hopefully go faster than a Hobie and be able to take 4 to 6 friends along, not have to dismantle after every sail and still be able to get onto one hull, sounds impossible doesn't it. Cheers wtf....... don't know what drugs your on but I want some!

Gold Coast cruising cat in big surf

No but I saw it , the guys a frigin idiot , He sat outside the Southport seaway from the afternoon before waiting for a break in the swell ,Then the next morning ,think it was about mid morning, come in through the seaway. That could have gone so wrong, when the swell picks the back of the boat up the rudders come out of the water ,bows go down lucky the boat goes straight and doesn't cross up ,they managed to get it . Not a bad wave I'd give it a 8.25 . Thing is they didn't need to risk going over the seaway ..All they had to do was sail another 50-60 miles north and come around the top of Moreton Island in to the bay they back down the inside of the bay..probly 1 day at the most ,If they had of kept going straight though the night even if they motored up the inside they would have been at Southport by lunch ,,Dickheads risked their lives ,and other peoples , and boat $400 000? for $15 worth of fuel and 3 hrs... What would have happened if they had stuck it in the piss , and the insurance company saw the idiotic vision on the TV ? As I said it could have got ugly..

    Sundance

Sorry to be the party pooper..! Do yourself a favour ,,,cut it up and take it to the dump , the repairs you talk of are not economically viable on that boat .Probly why you were given the boat in the first place??? Buy a boat which is going , Ps. I too have a sundance 4.3 in the backyard which has had the port bow snap completly off in front of the front beam..They are not built very well...
  19. Carbon is one of the best conductors around ,anyway when your talking lightning with millions of volts floating round and rain anything can become conductive thats why trees get hit by lightning ,,and timbers not a good conductor.plenty of people get hit by lightning using carbon fishing rods or carbon windsurfing masts during a electrical storm...

    Sailing Safety

Shit ..... whilst on the subject I've have a couple of close calls sailing alone one only a couple of months ago , Worst one (maybe not?) 15 -16 years ago a mate and I were sailing our moth skiffs out of Humpybong on a Saturday (no one else around in probly a 20-25 knot westerly ,you know where this is going don't you 25knots from the west and a moth skiff , My mate and I got a bit seperated .we hit the piss about half a dozen times each so we were about 500 meters apart half way across Bramble bay ,After one huge stack I jumped on the centerboard ,the boat come up with no rig.......the rig was there but the forestay broke......here I was trying to balance on a 18 inch wide boat mast and sail in the piss meter and a half of sea running drifting towards New Zealand ,and the only person who new where I was was 500m upside down on their boat????Neadless to say I thought I was fingered,,,,Luckily my brother arived as we were heading out from the club (I didn't see him) ,,thankfully he worked out what was happening and flew home and grabbed the tinny and come and picked me up..My mate on the other boat ended up finding me after flipping another few times and he headed back to get help and about an hour later turned up in the tinny with my brother,,,lesson learnt be very careful going out in an offshore breeze when nobody knows where you are...... I could have had a cheap trip to NZ... Second bad one only a couple of months ago was sailing H16 one up and whilst cruzing along to windward on trapeze the wind lulled and I reached for the trap handle and slipped on the side of the boat and somehow dislocated my shoulder, luckily I stayed on the boat .so here I am unwillingly going into a tack (when all the shit hit the fan I dropped the tiller extension )couldn't move my arm (at all) In agony screaming at the top of my lungs rolling round on the tramp...after about 2 minutes of "What the fuck have you done now ,and how my getting out of this one" I managed to pop my shoulder in with a thud ....luckilly I wasn't too far out and headed straight to the beach,,,then I thought how the F,.' am I gone to pull the thing up 100m of sand ,,,de-rig the boat load it and drive 3/4 hour home...luckily my wife was on the beach and virtually packed the boat up for me and drove me home ...and to the doctors the next day.... this really opened my eyes up maybe I'm getting too old for this shit, how do I do this more safely?? I use to sail heeps alone mainly sailboarding and I don't think it is anywhere as risky as sailing cats / dinghys single handed ,many a time I rescued myself 1 - 2 miles out after running out of wind or breaking a boom or mast or fin sailboarding. If out stack a sailboard or brake something on it it's not going to piss of on you like if you become detached with a cat ..you always have a board no matter how small to paddle in on. Maybe think about a sailboard If you want to do a fair amount of sailing alone.. Btw the shoulders not 100% ,say around 75%and the 6 weeks in the sling was a real pain in the ass .. Jay...........
