Coatings for wooden rudder blades

Recommended Posts

Hi Gary,

Cabots "Crystal Clear" is a water-based polyurethane I tried that worked OK. Bonus was I applied a single coat to raw wood and went racing an hour later.

In a bid to stop wooden blades warping in the sun I tried Chrome spray paint; but looked more like matt silver. Of course it was more effective to remove the blades instead of leaving them on the boat in the sun all the time.

This one is a marine grade polyurethane that ought to work: Goldspar Gloss,

Replace them with 2nd hand glass rudders. If you are determined to stick with timber use epoxy not poly, saturate with everdure first if they are old timber
