Recommended Posts

Hi guys

Just wondering if anyone has ideas about what u can use to replace the plastic clip that holds the rudder lever down when the rudders are engaged. Mine have perished an snapped. Also I'm still after a second hand jib.

Cheers

We don't use the levers anymore, just a 2:1 pulley to a clam cleat. The new boats have a grip device that the cleat is attached to so if you hit the bottom the device releases but you can also get a clamcleat that does exacly this - I use them - bought a pair from the uk for $35 delivered.

Lock the rope under the nut on one side of the lever, holds it well. I made some clips for the Hydra out of stainless (same system), but it was a lot of faffing about.

OK 2 photos. the white boat is my recent boat setup. the blue boat is a Mk1, this setup is good for being able to raise and lower the leward rudders from the windward side of the boat, but it tends to cause the rudders to go full over if you let go of them. I have found the aluminum cleats are better as the plastic ones tend to wear out over time. The springs are stainless tension springs from a runabout steering system (bias boating part No.6261). The big rubber O rings playing the part of shock absorber on the blue boat are out of hydraulic cylinders.

Cheers Phil

Be warned I recently bought a 4.3 and found the previous owner had taken this advice, when the rudder struck whatever it busted the transom where the rudder attaches. not too simple to fix. Buy the correct clips from Mike.

Looks like you needed this :)

Well yes maybe how does it work? where do I get them and why are they better than the original clips they seem to work fine when correctly fitted.

The cleat releases when an object is hit,

Available from the catsailor.net online store

Now that looks the ducks kit will keep it in mind for future upgrade, I have the originals working fine now and was able to find a clip in mums broom cupboard before I found you blokes, budget streched just now. Oh and don't tell mum.
